Elvira Dones was born in Durres (Albania) and raised in Tirana, the state capital. At the age of ten, Elvira writes a “book” (a dozen pages or so) that she decides to title “A Novel”. At sixteen she starts doing television shows. In ‘88 she leaves her country – at the time a Stalinist dictatorship – for Switzerland. She publishes her first real novel, Dashuri e huaj (No baggage) in 1997. During her time in Switzerland, Elvira writes seven novels, two collections of short stories, a few screenplays; she also directs and produces documentary films. Married and a mother of two, she now lives in the Washington D.C. suburbs and divides her time between the US, Switzerland, Italy and Albania. She considers the Balkans her cradle, daughter and son her house. Living with no baggage is her beloved, perennial human condition.
